• The Wolverines made it the great 8 on Monday evening with an 11-1 Mercy rule shortened home triumph over the visiting Genesee Valley/ Belfast Jagdogs(?).  The team’s record stands at 8-0 on the campaign.

Wyatt Karnuth and Sawyer Johnson combined on a 2 hitter over the 5 frames.  Karnuth fanned a half dozen in four. Johnson had 2 Ks in his inning of work before delivering the final run to send everyone home early.  At the plate, BR collected 10 hits spread throughout the lineup.  Once again, the team speed was a major component to the W as 8 bags were stolen.

Karnuth had a quick time of it in sitting down the visitors to start the game.  Five pitches were all that were needed to get the boys in to bat.  First batter, first pitch swinging grounded to Trey Buchholz at 2nd with the flip to Caden Allen at first.  A three pitch strikeout, then a pop out foul to Allen and BR was off the field.

Landon Danaher singled to left to start the BR inning.  He would work his way to third by thievery before Karnuth’s one out triple to left center allowed him to stroll home. A walk to Cam MacDonell put men at the corners.  A wild pitch scored Karnuth.  That was it for the first inning business as a couple of hard hit balls were right at the defenders.

A K and a fly to Reiss Gaines in center preceded the first runner for the visitors. A base on balls put one on.  But the next man grounded to Cam at third who made the toss across the diamond to end the frame.

Catcher Aydin Sisson led off the BR 2nd with a single to left. He stole second and advanced to third on a right-side groundout. While Matt Mitchell was up, a balk scored Sisson.  Matt then ripped a ball up the middle. He went on to steal second.  Danaher singled to left, Mitchell stopping at third. Landon stole second to put 2 into scoring position. Buchholz was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Karnuth grounded to third and on the fielder’s choice, Mitchell scored, bags still full. A wild pitch scored Danaher with Buchholz and Karnuth moving up. They pitched around Cam to re-load the bags.  Allen greeted the new hurler for the visitors with a sharp single to left, scoring Buchholz and Karnuth.  Cam stopped at second. A balk moved the runners up a base. After a strikeout, a ground ball by Sisson unfortunately hit the BR runner ending the frame.  BR 7-0.

GVBCS’s run came in the top of the third. A sharply hit ball to left center went for three bases.  During the next at bat, a pitching snafu allowed the runner to cross the plate. That at bat resulted in a free base for the Jagdogs. After a strikeout, the 4th batter of the inning lifted a ball into center.  Their coach was thinking maybe extra bases, at least another run on the board, as he windmilled his arm to bring the runner forward. When he realized what was about to happen, I imagine he had a “Ralphie dropping the lug nuts FUDGE moment”.  The coach frantically sent the runner back as Gaines made a great running catch on the play.  The throw in just missed doubling things up.  Next man up was Wyatt’s 4th strikeout victim.

BR got a couple more in their half.  Danaher popped a two-out ball to right that was booted into an extra base. Buchholz ripped a hot shot past the second baseman scoring Danaher. Buchholz stole a base. Karnuth walked, putting 2 on.  Cam dropped one into right, scoring Buchholz and Karnuth.  Unfortunately, BR couldn’t cash in more.  BR 10-1.

A lead off walk for the top of the 4th.  K#5 for Karnuth.  The runner got caught with too big of a lead and was picked off after a bit of a hot box.  Sisson to Allen to Danaher to Karnuth.  One pitch later, end of the inning as Karnuth recorded strikeout #6.

Darien Champlin’s two-out base knock to center didn’t develop into that magic margin, so BR would have to bat at least once more.

Johnson took to the mound to start the fifth.  After a strikeout, the next man beat out an infield ball despite a nice stretch by Allen on the play (so said the arbiter in blue).   An error by BR put two aboard. But strikeout 2 for Johnson then grounder to Danaher with the strong throw to end the frame.

Top of the order for BR needing just one to close it out.  Danaher drew a walk. He promptly stole 2nd and 3rd.  Johnson’s sharp single to center brought Landon the final 90 feet and ended the game.

The Joe Friday, “just the facts, ma’am” round up:

Danaher had two hits and scored 4.

Buchholz had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Karnuth, in addition to the strong mound performance, a triple, 2 RBIs, and scored 3.

Johnson had a hit in his lone at bat driving in the ultimate tally.

Cam drove in a pair with his double.

Allen had a hit and drove in a pair.

Sisson had a hit and scored one.

    Champlin had a hit.

Mitchell had a hit and a run scored.

BR is slated to go to Friendship on Wednesday.  Forecasts of rain, snow, and sub 40s high temps might change that.
