• Wednesday night, the Wolverines stayed perfect on this young season with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over perennial Class B power, the Livonia Bulldogs.  It was good to collect important sectional points as well as to see the resiliency from the squad. The game was part of the team’s trek to Myrtle Beach at the Ripken experience.

The boys were down by as many as 4 in this one and were able to claw their way back with runs scored in each of their final four at bats.  I was not a witness to the proceedings so this account is based on the stats received.

Trey Buchholz got the start on the mound for BR and went three, with 5 Ks to his credit.  Landon Barkley came on to finish things off, going the final 4 with a like number of strikeouts.

Somehow BR’s eight runs came from just two hits (both three baggers)! Closer inspection of the numbers, show they got help from five Bulldogs errors, four walks, and four hit batsmen.  They also used four stolen bases along the way.  It seems they didn’t waste any of their runners, leaving only four on the bases, while Livonia left twice that number.

BR, as the home squad, took the field first.  Groundball, Braden Zilker to Caden Allen for one down.  Buchholz then got two of his Ks for a quick inning.

BR replied in kind, going down with three groundball outs,

The Bulldogs fared much better in their 2nd putting three on the board, sending nine to the plate.   Three singles, a hit batter, an error, and a balk set them up.  Buchholz recorded two more Ks and the third out was a popper to Zilker.

The Wolverines had their last goose egg inning in their 2nd.  The only offense being Tavyn MacDonell was dotted with two down.  He stole second but got no farther.

Buchholz started the third with his fifth K.  A single and walk put two aboard.  The next batter infield flied to Allen.  The final out and the Bulldogs’ fourth run came on a hotbox play with one scoring.  A runner was caught on the paths and everyone in the infield had a touch of the ball before Charlie Militello made the tag. Bulldogs, 4-0.

BR halved the lead in the bottom of the 3rd.  Kingston Loucks reached on an error, Zilker was plunked, and Buchholz drew a walk to load the bags.   Reiss Gaines drove one to Center deep enough to score Loucks and advance the others.   Aydin Sisson grounded out to short but earned the RBI as Zilker came across.  Livonia 4-2.

Barkley came on to pitch the 4th, swapping spots with Buchholz to short.  Barkley struck out the first man he faced.  Forced a comebacker for out 2.  Walked a Bulldog before ending the frame, Buchholz to Allen.

BR tied it up in their half of the 4th.  Barkley started with a triple to left.  MacDonell got aboard when the right fielder dropped a popper, allowing Barkley to score. Tavyn got to second on the play. An out later, Loucks walked.  Both runners advanced during Zilker’s at bat by stealing bases.  MacDonell came across on a passed ball and the game was knotted at 4.

After Barkley got the lead off batter swinging to start the 5th things temporarily took a turn for the worse for BR.  A hit batter followed put one on.  A double to the outfield and two errors on the one batted ball allowed both runner and batter to score.  A K from Barkley and a grounder, Buchholz to Allen ended things. Livonia 6-4.

The Wolverines got one of those back in their half. Gaines reached on an error. He moved up on a wild pitch and came around to score on the same pitch as the catcher miscued things.   Sisson and Barkley got on by walking but neither was able to be moved around.

The top of the sixth went by quickly.  Two Ks by Barkley and a fly ball to Maddox Davison was the defense.

BR took over in the bottom of the 6th. Militello was hit by a pitch. He got erased on Loucks’s fielder’s choice.  Zilker got hit, two aboard.  Buchholz tripled to right scoring the two in front of him.   Trey came across on a passed ball while Gaines was at the plate.   BR 8-6.

Last chance for the Bulldogs. Comebacker started things. A BR error put one on.  Fielder’s choice Zilker to Buchholz erased one. A single had two on the bases before Zilker corralled a fly ball for the final out.

In summary, from the looks of things, (again this is not the usual eyewitless version of things) this one might have had Abner Doubleday spinning in his resting place.  Nine total errors, seven HBPs, seventeen combined Ks and only five of the 14 runs were driven in.  But a win is a win is a win…

Hits for BR, triples each by Buchholz and Barkley.  Buchholz drove in a pair, Gaines and Sisson one each. Touching the plate, Buchholz, Gaines, MacDonell, and Militello once each.  Loucks and Zilker had a pair of runs scored.

BR has some more things planned for Myrtle today.   Then the next game action is next Thursday, the 11th, when they will  host the GV/ Belfast combo.  Game is at 5 pm.
