everyone's here, it's time to begin

all that was there, and what might have been
is no longer here, it's time to begin

    Sectional Champs.

That never gets old, but something about this group, you can sense a yearning to go a few more steps.

By the way, if you say you know that song above, I’m calling B….R on you…

The Bolivar- Richburg Wolverines captured the Section V Class C2 championship on a very balmy Sunday afternoon in Hornell.  They defeated the Geneseo Blue Devils 4-2 in a tight pitcher’s showdown between Trey Buchholz and their top gun.  The stats were as evenly squared as the score would indicate, both pitchers going the distance.    Both gave up 4 hits. Trey fanned 10, one better than their kid.  Trey walked only two, three less than theirs.

BR fell behind in the first after a couple of unfortuitous plays.   They then claimed the lead in the second.  Watched as Geneseo tied it in the 4th, only to get the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.  Then the Wolverines got a HUGE bit of insurance in the sixth.

As per the usual, let’s recap.

Things started pretty good for BR, a nice running catch in left by Tavyn MacDonell was one down.  And then things weren’t pretty good.  An error on the infield put the runner at second.  Next man ripped a shot over the head of the outfielder for three, run scores. Holding the damage to one was HUGE!   A K by Trey was 2 gone.  Next man ripped a shot Tavyn’s way and he made a fine diving catch to end the rally.

Apparently, the playoff nerves were two sided.   BR had theirs for 1 run, Geneseo got away unscathed.  Lead off back-to-back walks and a double steal had BR at 2nd and third with no one out.  No cash.

A grounder to Maddox Davison at third, toss to Allen started the Geneseo second.  A walk followed.  Fielder’s choice, Landon Barkley to Braden Zilker at 2nd for the out, not in time for the DP.   Trey’s second K ended the threat.

MacDonell led off the BR second with a walk.  He stole second. Charlie Militello singled into right, allowing Tavyn to get to the plate, TIE GAME.   A bad pick off allowed Charlie to second.  Braden Zilker laid down a bunt in front, the pitcher fielded the ball then missed the man covering at first, putting the ball out of play, allowing Charlie to score and Zilker to take second. Reiss Gaines grounded out moving Zilker to third.  Maybe more.   A walk to Buchholz and a stolen base and once again second and third for BR but nothing doing this time.  However, they had the lead, 2-1.

A quick inning for Buchholz in the top of the third.  Grounder, Zilker to Allen, for one. And two Ks with some of his finest pitches.

Unfortunately for BR, their inning was almost as quick.  A two out hit by pitch for MacDonell gave BR life.  He stole second and got to third on a wild pitch, but..

The Devils got their other run in the 4th.  After a K and popper to Zilker, it looked like another quick one for Trey.  A ball fell in front of the outfield to put one on.  A bad hop Texas Leaguer allowed two aboard.  A ricochet shot off Buchholz, Barkley, and out to the outfield allowed the run to score, man at second.  Tie score, Trey fanned the last man.

With two down in the BR 4th, Gaines singled to right.  He promptly stole second.  Buchholz helped his cause, single to right and driving in Reiss.   BR had the lead back, for good this time, 3-2.

Three up, three down for Geneseo in the fifth.  A fly to Gaines making a nice run to his right. Another K by Trey, a popup foul to Davison off the third base line.

BR didn’t fare any better in their half.  Barkley reached on an error, well, technically there were two errors on the same ball.  The grounder five holed the infielder, and the outfielder booted it some allowing Barley to get to second.  Landon stole third, but couldn’t get in.

Geneseo in order again in the 6th.   Barkley to Allen for one, Buchholz made a “look what I found” grab and the flip to Allen for 2.  Finishing touch, another K by Trey.

Insurance time.  Militello drew a one out walk, fouling off a few in the process.  A pickoff throw down from catcher to first was messed up allowing Charlie to hustle in to second. A dropped third strike forced a throw to first, allowing Charlie to get to third. Gaines singled into left driving in Charlie with the insurance.  BR 4-2.

Three outs and a handshake, but not without some tense moments.  The first man reached on an error.  A walk put two on. Trey K #9.  Pop up, deep behind the plate, Aydin Sisson making the nice run and catch.  Geneseo did not tag up on the play, mysteriously.   Final K from Trey.

Hands in the air, Gloves in the air, Prayers and hymns. Sectional champions once again!

Gaines had two hits and the winning run scored, also the insurance RBI. Buchholz had a hit for an RBI.  MacDonell scored the first BR run.   Militello had him self a nice game.  A hit and RBI, two runs scored. Zilker had the nice bunt that resulted in the second BR run.

Trey was named Championship game MVP.

Next will be the yearning for the Crossover game, Class unification if you will versus Letchworth.  The game will be played at Houghton University on Tuesday at 5.

While we are excited with the win and all, let us not forget the reason for this holiday and for our ability as a community and a nation to enjoy such things.  It is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend all of us. Also keep in mind those who are no longer with us but did work, battle, and sacrifice for the benefit of all.  Happy Memorial Day, and thank you to all who have had family members who have made those sacrifices for you and me.
